I moved to Seattle at the end of 1997. Grunge was still current. The first Harry Potter book was published in the United States. Princess Diana was killed in a tragic car accident in 1997. Then people started talking about this thing called Y2K. It was a pretty amazing time to move to Seattle as so much of its original charm was living its best life at that moment.
The other thing that Seattle had was a collection of cool media outlets in Seattle. People would still pick up a copy of The Stranger when they were going to grab their coffee at Starbucks. People actually were still listening to 107.7 The End and attending shows at Rock Candy.
Needless to say, the media in Seattle has gone through some major changes. Technology has changed everything and one of the biggest industries to experience this is advertising. The behemoth radio and television advertisers of ages past were forced to adapt or die. The dot com bust was coming and that is when I went from doing marketing and promotions to becoming a salesperson selling radio. There’s a lot more to my story and what happened in Seattle media over the next two decades!
